Derby City Council have announced (7th March 2025) that their proposals for bus lanes on Duffield Road and Osmaston Road would not be implemented as currently designed as a result of public feedback.
Derby Cycling Group is supportive of the general aims of encouraging bus travel as well as improving facilities for cyclists and pedestrians but, certainly for Duffield Road, the proposals degraded the cycling experience and, thus, as they stood, could not be supported.
The Council announcement mentions that light segregation of the cycle lanes may now be implemented together with other improvements including “kerbside parking on the A6”. We look forward to seeing details of these proposals and having the opportunity to provide feedback on the revised plans.
A possible worry is that the “kerbside parking on the A6” may be the Council continuing their refusal to enforce the existing “no parking” restrictions outside of St Benedict’s School (which cause the on road cycle lane to be unusable). Hopefully the proposals address this parking issue as well as providing improvements for cyclist safety.
