Cycle – Rail feedback requested

The Cycle Rail Working Group is requesting feedback on people’s experiences of combining rail and cycle travel with a view to creating a new guidance document for the train operators. The previous version (2016) of the “Cycle – Rail toolkit” can be found here.

The Cycle Rail working group “brings together the rail industry and other interested parties seeking to make it easier to combine cycling and rail. It is supported by Active Travel England and management support is provided by Sustrans.”

The working group want to understand more about people’s experiences and expectations whether they currently combine cycles and trains or not.

You can provide your feedback here. The survey seems designed for regular commuters rather than occasional journeys across the country but there are a number of free format fields to make your points. The deadline for responding to the survey is 9th January 2023.

Personally I’m fairly uninspired by the 81 page Toolkit as, while none of the guidelines are bad (e.g. effective signage) it seems to be focusing on “tinkering” or on things that should be obvious while ignoring the major problems. The major disincentive to using Cycle – Rail is the inability to easily book a journey including a cycle (it’s never easy and impossible for some journeys) and being sure that any booking including a cycle will be honoured.
