Spondon Asda island Improvements

Update 19th June 2026 – the support from Derby Cycling Group for improved facilities to aid safe use of the roundabout have been reported by Derbyshire Live

We’re pleased to see funding in place to investigate improvements to the Asda island in Spondon. In particular, improvements to the currently dangerous crossings of the existing cycle routes over the roads will be welcomed.

Having reviewed the plan in detail, we can see there are a huge number of great features in the scheme. Because Derby City Council would not meet with us to discuss these, we have produced a report which sets out Derby Cycling Group’s support for the plan and identifies it’s good features as well as requesting some changes and additions to the scheme to make it even more effective.

Spondon councillors and Derby City Council’s transport leader have received copies of the plan. Both agree in principle that safer crossings are needed here, but have said nothing as yet in public.

There is vocal opposition from some drivers to the plan because it also includes putting traffic lights on the main carriageway of the roundabout. The critical point about DCG’s stance is that safe, signal controlled, crossings can be installed without putting traffic lights on the main carriageway.

Tony Roelich is leading the DCG involvement in the project. Support is also requested from local DCG members who may be able to influence their local councillors.
