Derwent Valley cycle path (north of Derby)

Derwent_MillsDuring the recent Parliamentary debate on Cycling (2nd Sept), local MP Pauline Latham called for “some funding to enable the extension of the proposed cycleways down through the world heritage site, via the historic mills at Belper, Milford and Darley Abbey, to the Silk Mill museum in Derby”.

This comment was referring to the already announced funding for cycle routes in the Peak District and Pauline was calling for the existing plans to be extended to allow a Derwent-side cyclepath to be extended into the centre of Derby.

  1. For several years I have been advocating that the riverside path from the Handyside Bridge to Little Eaton should be extended to Duffield. This would provide a much safer hill free route for the many commuters who currently pedal along the A6. It would establish a cycle track most of the way to Belper and also, I think, be the most scenic recreational route in the area.

I have surveyed several variations on the route, which require no new structures. Also large parts of the route already have a surface adequate for bicycles. All the difficulties lie in the varied ownership of the route and I suspect the paperwork may cost more than the physical works. The first kilometer lies within the City boundary; it is mostly un-surfaced but already a public footpath, being part of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way

I have been meaning to raise this at a members’ evening for some time, but other commitments and an incredible chapter of accidents has prevented my attendance recently. I believe that Ian Dent and Lucy Care have raised my suggestion, but it was not met with any enthusiasm!

  2. Lack of enthusiasm is probably far too strong.

I would certainly be in favour of the suggested route and I don’t think anyone would be against more cycle routes in Derby and its surrounds.

There was some discussion at the members meeting of the, possibly insurmountable, problems in accomplishing your plans but I would certainly expect the DCG to be supportive. I know you (or your colleagues) have been in touch with Sustrans who actually employ people to overcome the obstacles to new routes so their support is key. I think trying to get the plans included in the Derby City “Rights of Way” consultation would also increase the visibility.

I hope it comes to fruition – I’d certainly use the route (probably everyday for commuting).
