Initially the developers tried to make the old route hard to use (digging up tarmac, making it as muddy as possible) but people were still using the route. Eventually, the developers installed strong, spiked fencing so that the old route is now definitely unusable. The land used by the old route has been designated by the developer as partially meeting their biodiversity requirements. In a sensible world, the old route would have been kept open until the new route was opened. However, we are now in the situation of the old route being closed (since mid 2025) with no agreed date for the new route to be opened.

Also in 2025, the new route was built to an excellent standard. However, it has remained fenced off and not open for use. Originally, the developers said that the replacement route would be in place by August 2025 (in fact their signage still says this!) but there is no sign of the new route being opened.

The replacement route (east end) behind temporary barriers

The replacement route at north end (behind barriers)

The sum effect is that cycle travel between the Erewash canal and the remainder of the Nutbrook Trail is hard and certainly not suitable for families. Subsequently both a Starbucks and Macdonalds have been opened on site.

As the route is part of NCN 67, the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (ex Sustrans) have been chasing the developers for progress since last year but, so far, without success. The planning authority (Erewash Borough Council) have been informed of the planning condition not being met and have created an “enforcement case” in March 2026 but again with no visible effect on the ground.

The Erewash councillors for the area of the New Stanton Park have been contacted and are investigating. After various conversations, the developers have now submitted a planning application to allow them to install gates on the new route and to lock these gates daily from 6pm to 7am. While the planning process (publicity, consultation, determination – likely to be months) proceeds the route will remain closed.

Details of the gate proposal can be found at the Erewash planning site (search for reference PA/2026/0182). It will be noted that the gated “solution” is proposed for an initial period of 3 years. Comments can be submitted to Erewash Borough Council following instructions here.

A proposal to close sections of the National Cycle Network preventing usage on each summer evening for leisure users and for early morning commuters is not acceptable. No similar time restriction on the NCN across the whole is the UK is known.

The developers claim this timed closure is necessary to prevent users of the new route accessing other parts of the development site. The reasons for this need to restrict access vary but include reducing theft and also safety to prevent path users falling into open trenches or accessing electrical installations. These reasons hold little water as the remainder of the site is protected from access by mobile metal barriers and the use of these could easily be extended alongside the new route allowing it to be open 24×7. A cynic might think the developers are delaying the new route opening as much as possible and imposing extra requirements (e.g. time slots) just to ease their management of the site.

Site protected from access from still open section of NCN67 by metal barriers

In summary, the excellent route from the Erewash Canal towards Shipley Park is closed (except for the unsuitable and dangerous diversion route) and has been for 8 months beyond when it was originally scheduled for reopening and 16 months after the first unit on the new Park was occupied.

The Developers of New Stanton Park have closed the existing route of NCN67 with the promise of providing a replacement route.
